The Advanced Recon Force helmet was one of my favorite personal projects. I tried new painting methods for this helmet that took days to complete, but the result was stunning. A cast of this helmet came from Kevin Weir at the clonetrooper forums; he used some kind of custom hybrid resin that made it very hard to trim, but it was very durable. To paint the helmet, I had to mask off layers of camouflage. Literally the entire helmet would be covered in masking tape except for the few tiny, random geometric patterns that would be painted in a shade of grey. After that layer was completely removed, another layer would be masked randomly and painted in another shade of grey, and so on you get the idea. To add weathering, I sprayed the lower areas with a dark grey or olive color, then took a medium sanding sponge to the helmet to scrape it off. The final piece was one of my best paintjobs to this day.
